Aaron Maier

Meet Aaron

I create narrative paintings and drawings that use the visual language of caricature and cartoons to better understand my connection to indigeneity, latinidad, whiteness, jewishness and maleness. I work from memories, personal photographs, and writings to make paintings that critically examine the way in which my family performs and participates in social disparities that are inherent in class differences and disguised through mechanisms such as race and gender norms. My goal with my paintings is to expose the problems that come with these social constructs, such as domestic violence, dominant culture, misogyny, racism, and to offer myself and others a chance to self reflect on unlearning many of these behaviors.
